These 6 Steps Can Boost Your AMP Page LoadUp To 80%

The world is fast becoming mobile centric and from now onwards all the searches will be done on handheld devices. If your website isn’t ready for mobile search then you are going to face a difficult time with your web business. While there are many ways to test strength of AMP pages, WordPress provides a great environment to test page speed. Also you can improve speed of your AMP pages by 15-80%.

Here are 6 steps to increasing AMP page load

Step 1: Install and active the AMP plugins

The basic plugins needed for AMP to work are AMP plugins by automatic. The plugin functionality will automatically create AMP-compatible versions of plugins of all your posts. Here it is necessary to mention that the plugins will be generated only for posts and not webpages. But you can make the plugins compatible to webpages by downloading an additional plugin AMP for WP. This plugin is integrated with Google AdSense and it also has rel=canonical support. Also there is a drag-and-drop page builder and the plugin is capable of creating AMP content different from the content of standard mobile pages.

Step 2: Setup Google Analytics for AMP

For setting your mobile pages for AMP, you need a Google Analytics tracking id and the code should be saved in the WP setting for AMP. If you already have GA id, you can easily copy that code from the Tracking Info from GA settings and copy that code and paste it into WordPress by logging into your WP account. If you don’t have GA account, then you need creating one. The code will start with UA.

Step 3: Test/Validate the AMP setup

After the URLs are ready, it’s time to test their functionality. The pages have to be configured with plugins and the GA tracking code decently saved in the WP settings. If the pages aren’t working properly, Google won’t display the pages in its search results. Testing has another advantage that is it highlights semi-functional AMP pages and prevents those pages from going to Google.

There are a couple of ways to test AMP pages. Choose any of the ways and test functionality of your mobile pages before they are sent for indexing by Google.

Option 1: AMP Test

  • Go to https://search.google.com/test/amp
  • Paste URL and click “Run Test” to see results

Option 2: Developer Console

It is only for Google Chrome browser

  • Open the AMP page in browser
  • Append #development=1 to the URL
  • Go to Chrome Menu and open Chrome Dev Tools and click on Console Tab
  • Validation will be successful, if there is no error

Option 3: AMP Validator

  • Go to https://validator.ampproject.org/
  • Drop the AMP URL and click “Validate”
  • The tool highlights errors in HTML

Step 4: Submit AMP URLs for indexation

You can submit your AMP pages to Google if you are using AMP test through Google Search Console. Once you have completed the test and the page is validated, you can click on “submit to Google” tab. Or you can log into your Google Search Console account to submit the URLs directly to Google.

Step 5: View Google Search Console to troubleshoot errors

Google Search Console is the one stop solution to managing all AMP pages. It will show indexed AMP pages and also issues with the pages. You can find the issues and troubleshoot those problems using the previous step.

Step 6: Test page speed

Run your AMP and standard mobile pages on a page speed tool to see the difference between downloading speed of two different pages.

Conclusion

Google is preparing to roll out its mobile-first index and page speed will be the most critical factor in mobile digital marketing. Now it has become more important to have a look at your AMPs and boost their functionality so that they perform well on mobile page rankings.
