A search engine is a software system developed to search information on the web. In another definition, it is called a website that collects info and arranges it in a systematic manner for convenience of searchers. It can also be compared with an online database of information.

The job of a search engine is to gather information and provide info to the searchers. The users are provided a search box in which they enter keywords or phrases related to the content. The search engine finds websites matching with the searched words in its database and provides results in pages. The websites are ranked according to their use value.

Why is Search Engine Important?

World Wide Web is full of information but there is no source of searching specific info regarding products, services, places, and individuals. Users have to directly enter the website address in the browser to get specific info. Having a search engine helps to scan the web and access info. Search engines provide information matching with search intent; users are provided a number of options to choose from.

Websites use search engines for marketing. They strive to achieve a high rank on search result pages as high rank brings quality traffic that converts into profit. Search engines don’t charge any fee for ranking but they charge the fee for paid marketing called Pay Per Click. Search marketing is called search engine optimization that involves making websites search engine friendly.

What is the future of Search Engines?

Search engines will continue to serve websites and visitors in future. Their role and responsibility will strengthen their position as they work like platforms where visitors can find information. Also, they keep updating their algorithm to provide better search results. Google releases more than 100 updates every year to improve its results.
